Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said he read the wrong speech at the Republican National Convention on Monday after calling Democratic policies a “clear and imminent danger.”
“Today’s Democratic agenda is a clear and present danger to America, our institutions, our values and our people,” Johnson said in a speech to the convention audience in Milwaukee.
But he later told the PBS NewsHour that he had intended to read a different version of his speech calling for unity, but an older version of his speech was being read on the teleprompter.
“That speech was written last week. Literally the wrong speech was uploaded,” Johnson said.
“I removed that phrase and instead called for a solemn moment in history and that we should heed President Trump’s call for unity,” he said.
“We need to heal and unify our country. I didn’t know how to put that without messing up the teleprompter.”
The comments came as both sides debate campaign rhetoric and rising tensions in the US following the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump.
The former president himself called for Americans to come together after a bullet grazed his ear while he was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
