Rory McIlroy loses his lead at the Masters as Cameron Young shares the top position on Sunday

Exciting Finale Awaits at the Masters

For those who thought Rory McIlroy’s emotional second round signaled the end of his Masters journey, it’s important to remember that, at Augusta, the real action often unfolds on Sunday’s back nine.

After an eventful third round on Saturday, where McIlroy’s impressive six-stroke lead vanished over 36 holes, the final nine holes are bound to bring some thrills.

New York’s Cameron Young and the defending champion, McIlroy, are both at 11 under par and will be the final pairing in the 90th round of the Masters.

McIlroy began his day at 12 under, but his advantage shrank quickly following a bogey, while Patrick Reed picked up three birdies. McIlroy managed to birdie the third hole, and Reed bogeyed the fourth, which kept McIlroy comfortably ahead. However, Reed’s performance tapered off, allowing Young to surge upward in the ranks.

Young, who started the day eight strokes behind McIlroy and was 4 over after the first round, tied for the lead with a birdie on No. 16, just after McIlroy bogeyed the 12th hole, causing him to drop to second place. McIlroy shot a remarkable 7-under 65 to reclaim the top spot, while Young finished the round with a 1-over 73. Young bagged eight birdies but faced difficulty on the par-5 15th when he ended up in the water.

Things began to unravel for McIlroy on the back nine; he hit the water on the 11th hole, incurring a double bogey, and also faced bogeys on the 12th and 18th holes.

However, despite his struggles, the competition remains tight, with 20 players within seven strokes of the lead and 14 within six. McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood were the only players in the top 20 to start Saturday above par, hinting that the excitement is building for Sunday.

Sam Burns sits in third at 10 under, while Shane Lowry, buoyed by a hole-in-one, follows him closely. Jason Day and Justin Rose both stand at 8 under, with Scottie Scheffler and Haotong Li at 7 under. Scheffler also delivered an impressive 65, despite the shifting nature of the tournament.

Notable players include Patrick Cantlay, Russell Henry, and Reed at 6 under, while Collin Morikawa is at 5 under. Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka are both 4 under.

McIlroy and Young, having played together in the initial two rounds, are set to tee off once more at 2:25 p.m. ET. McIlroy aims to rebound and possibly become the first to win back-to-back green jackets since Tiger Woods.
