Rory McIlroy loses his temper at a loud PGA Championship spectator: 'Be quiet'

Frustration for Rory McIlroy at PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy faced disappointment on the 16th hole of the PGA Championship, watching as his ball took an unfortunate bounce. His dreams of clinching a major title this year slipped away, and without holding back, he addressed the crowd with a sharp “Shut up.”

This moment encapsulated a challenging final day for McIlroy, which cost him dearly in the tournament.

He ended the round at 4 under, falling five strokes behind winner Aaron Rye. Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy expressed regret over missed opportunities on two key holes. “I didn’t convert on two par 5s, and I had a bogey on a par 4 that I could’ve reached,” he lamented. Those three holes, he felt, were particularly disappointing.

“If I had made a birdie on the par 5, it would have changed the whole day,” he added, hinting at how one swing can, in hindsight, redirect the flow of an entire round.

While he had a shot at his seventh major, understanding the stakes only added to his frustration as he stood on the 16th, trailing Rye by three strokes. After hitting from the rough, the ball unfortunately ended up in a bunker.

In that moment, McIlroy voiced his annoyance, reacting as the crowd let out a collective groan over his luck. “McIlroy is visibly upset with a fan,” the announcer noted.

As he approached the ball, he turned towards the spectators and seemed to indicate that security should intervene with the fan who had provoked him.

Ultimately, McIlroy managed a par on the hole, though others were scoring birdies with relative ease, highlighting his struggles in contrast to competitors.
