Rory McIlroy is driving history.
McIlroy came third in the Masters in the third round on Saturday, but began the day with six straight threes (two pars, three birdies, eagle) to surge to a three-stroke lead at 11 under.
How rare and impressive is that scorecard?
According to the PGA Tour, McIlroy is the first player in Masters history.
McIlroy has played his best golf for years to start 2025.
He won the PGA Championships (2012 and 2014), US Open (2011) and The British Open (2014), but never surpassed second place in Master (2022).
McIlroy took a four-shot lead on Sunday in 2011, collapsed into the back nine after seeing the green jacket, filling in 10 from duck hook drives and triple bogeys.
It's already been a few days for McIlroy, and McIlroy wasted the possibility of a good opening round by double bogeying two of the last four holes and finishing with a uniform 72.
However, McIlroy recovered the chance on Friday with a bounce back 6 under 66 round.
And it appears that night sleep did nothing to cool his club down.
Heading to the seventh hole on Saturday, McIlroy took a three-stroke lead over Bryson Deccanbaugh and rose four times with Shane Laurie and Justin Rose.
McIlroy will take over a decade to his infuriating pursuit to become the sixth golfer to complete a career grand slam.
During that period, confidence was sometimes a roller coaster, but he came to Augusta National last month at the finest in late January and in the athletes championship championship victory.
