Rory McIlroy shares a relatable response after a tough shot at the Scottish Open: 'I'm so bad at golf'

Rory McIlroy’s Relatable Golf Moment at Genesis Scottish Open

Rory McIlroy, the celebrated Northern Irish golfer with six major titles under his belt, showed a surprisingly familiar reaction to a mishit during the Genesis Scottish Open on Sunday. After a shot that veered off the 16th hole, he was caught saying, “Oh my god, I’m so bad at golf,” clearly exasperated.

It’s interesting, right? A top-notch player expressing self-doubt. Yet, this couldn’t be further from the truth, as a broadcaster chimed in to add some context to McIlroy’s comment, suggesting, “I’ll replace it any time.” It’s a reminder that even the best players have their off days.

“It’s a very relatable sport,” the broadcaster added, which hits the nail on the head. In golf, it’s all about ups and downs—much like life itself. McIlroy’s approach shot on the par 4 found its way into the rough, away from the green, leading to a bogey. But, you know, he didn’t dwell on it. He bounced back with a birdie on the 17th and rounded off his day with a par on 18.

At the end of the tournament, McIlroy tied for seventh place with a score of 12 under par, which, let’s be honest, is still impressive—even if it was five strokes behind the winner, Tom Kim. Minu Lee came in second at 15 under, with a cluster of players, including Robert McIntyre, Keita Nakajima, and Johnny Kiefer, finishing at 13 under.

Despite his humorous lament about being “very bad at golf,” it’s worth noting that McIlroy’s year has been pretty stellar. He defended his Masters title back in April, winning by just a stroke against Scottie Scheffler, and snagged a second-place finish at the Genesis Invitational in February.

Interestingly, he also tied for seventh at the PGA Championship, finishing with a solid 64 after a challenging previous round. With the British Open coming up next week, McIlroy is undoubtedly looking to refine his game even further. “There were good things today, but there were also bad things,” he shared after the tournament. “I’m happy to end the week with a good score, but I know I need to practice a little bit between now and next Thursday to be really happy with my game.”
