Rory McIlroy and Team Europe Celebrate Ryder Cup Victory
Rory McIlroy and Team Europe are definitely feeling elated after successfully retaining the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. It was quite the tournament, filled with some tough competition.
However, McIlroy has mixed feelings about the 2025 Ryder Cup, acknowledging that the experience might not live up to the actual game moments one would expect. Interestingly, this marked the seventh occasion in Ryder Cup history for an away team to claim victory, but the more prominent narrative from last month revolved around a scuffle involving Team Europe and fans at the event.
“Like everyone else, I’ve been keeping tabs on the stories coming out post-Ryder Cup,” he commented. “Unfortunately, I believe that overshadows what we should be celebrating: a fantastic performance by our European team.”
Even while McIlroy was engaged in a back-and-forth with some enthusiastic fans, he mentioned that he didn’t fully grasp how well his team was performing at that moment.
“The Americans were putting well, and we just seemed to match them, every single time,” he explained, showcasing the competitive spirit of the match. Team Europe was seeking to achieve a significant win on American soil, but Team USA made it a nail-biter during the singles matches on Sunday. Ultimately, they managed to secure the Ryder Cup victory as Lowry drained a crucial birdie putt on the final hole.
Throughout the weekend, McIlroy felt like he was public enemy number one among the American crowd. While some cheers were friendly, far too many crossed the line into hostility. One fan, for example, made a rather inappropriate comment about McIlroy’s wife while he was preparing for a shot, prompting him to step away and respond to the crowd.
“Honestly, it feels a bit impulsive when I engage with fans,” he reflected. “Sometimes I do respond, sometimes I hold back. I guess it just depends on the moment.” McIlroy noted that he doesn’t always plan these responses. Sometimes, they just happen.
In the end, the European team triumphed over the U.S. with a score of 15-13, claiming their first Ryder Cup win since 2012. It might not dominate the headlines, but McIlroy is determined to keep it in mind moving forward.
