Rory McIlroy’s Mixed Feelings About the Green Jacket
After 11 long years, Rory McIlroy finally completed his career Grand Slam by winning the Masters in April. However, it seems wearing the green jacket has become a bit tiresome for him—much quicker than one might expect.
Securing that coveted Masters title wasn’t straightforward. He had to go through a playoff against Justin Rose to achieve it. Once he won, wearing the jacket became a part of the deal, almost like an obligation, and he found that he had to wear it everywhere he went.
In a recent interview with CNBC, McIlroy shared a moment from a trip to Abu Dhabi, where, quite frankly, he didn’t seem thrilled about donning the jacket. He recalled, “I was in India a few weeks ago and the last two weeks in the Middle East, and wherever I go when I’m doing an event, people want to see the green jacket. Sometimes you don’t want to wear it. I kind of complained about wearing it in Abu Dhabi.”
He even joked with his wife, Erica, saying, “If you ever hear me complaining about wearing this again, punch me or something, because I’ve been waiting my whole life to wear this and I’m complaining about wearing it.” There’s something relatable about that, right? It’s funny how sometimes we get bogged down by expectations, even when we’ve achieved something monumental.
Interestingly, McIlroy had already hit a significant milestone in 2014, having completed 75% of his career Grand Slams by then. It was really just a matter of time before he snagged that green jacket, yet year after year, someone else managed to step into the spotlight.
Immediately following his victory, you could see the release of immense pressure when McIlroy sank that winning putt. He collapsed onto the green, almost in disbelief, as if a weight had been lifted. Ironically, he found some relief in letting the jacket slip off his shoulders from time to time.
He might want to be cautious about where he places that jacket next April, especially at his first Champion’s Dinner. It’ll be interesting to see how he feels about it then.
