Rose’s Comeback

Star midfielder Rose Lovell’s return was thought to boost Gotham, which has been struggling in the league. However, the team suffered a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Kansas City on Saturday, leaving fans with mixed feelings.

This match marked Lovell’s first appearance since undergoing ankle surgery last November. She’s a favorite among supporters, and her absence was certainly felt as Gotham was sitting at 3 wins, 3 draws, and 5 losses.

“Her dedication during recovery was truly impressive, and it’s great to have her back with us,” Gotham head coach Juan Carlos Amoros noted earlier this week. The excitement mounted as Lovell began warming up in the 31st minute, her energy infectious.

During halftime, she shared a brief moment with Liberty’s Brenna Stewart, a sign of camaraderie and support. Once Lovell stepped onto the field in the 74th minute, the applause was resounding as fans welcomed her with enthusiasm. Although she showed flashes of her skill—with some signature dribbles—she didn’t find the back of the net.

Gotham’s day ended with the presentation of their Concacaf W Champions Cup title, a reminder of their recent success. However, they currently sit in 9th place in the league, in danger of falling further down by the end of the weekend, having not won in their last four NWSL matches (0-1-3).

With only 13 goals scored in 11 games, their offensive struggles are clear. In contrast, Kansas City, boasting a record of 9 wins and 2 draws, demonstrated their dominance early in the match.

Gotham fell behind quickly due to a miscommunication that allowed Temwa Chawinga to set up Michelle Cooper for an early goal. Just minutes later, Chawinga found the net again, turning a quick play into a 2-0 lead for Kansas City.

Gotham attempted to bounce back in the second half, coming close to scoring on two occasions. Their first chance, in the 49th minute, was nullified by a foul call against Sonnet after a corner kick, and later, Estelle Gonzalez’s goal was disallowed for offside.
