Roy Cooper Announces Senate Run in North Carolina

Former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper has officially entered the Senate race in North Carolina. He made his announcement Monday morning, aiming to fill the seat vacated by Republican Senator Tom Tillis.

“I thought about it and prayed, and I decided: I’m running from North Carolina to become the next US Senator,” he shared on social media.

This move is seen as a significant win for Democrats, marking Cooper as their top candidate for the upcoming election. His candidacy boosts hopes for a potential flip in a Senate seat currently held by Republicans.

Cooper’s announcement had been anticipated, with several news outlets speculating his intentions. Just days before, he hinted at his plans during the North Carolina Democratic “Unity Dinner,” where he encouraged attendees considering a run to stand, garnering enthusiastic cheers.

The National Republican Senate Committee (NRSC) wasted no time in responding, launching digital ads targeting Cooper ahead of his formal campaign kick-off. In their messaging, they described him using sharply critical language, emphasizing his alignment with more progressive ideals and contrasting them with traditional GOP values.

While Cooper isn’t the only Democrat in the race—former Representative Wiley Nickel announced his candidacy earlier—many view Cooper as the favorite for the party’s nomination.

Cooper, who enjoyed a solid reputation as governor during his eight-year term, had previously been floated as a potential running mate for then-Vice President Kamala Harris following President Joe Biden’s successful campaign.

This upcoming Senate race is expected to be fiercely competitive, with substantial financial resources likely poured into the contest. Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Whatley is also positioning himself as a strong contender, bolstered by support from former President Donald Trump.

Trump publicly endorsed Whatley, vowing that he would be an “incredible senator,” citing Whatley’s track record and support for Trump’s policies. Whatley, a former chair of the North Carolina GOP, expressed confidence in his chances, noting North Carolina’s consistent Republican leanings in recent elections.

Interestingly, Lara Trump, who had been speculated as a strong candidate for the seat, has opted not to run after thoughtful discussions with her family and advisors.

Overall, this race is shaping up to be one of the most watched contests in the 2026 midterm elections, bringing together a mix of established political figures and strong party loyalties. As the campaign unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Cooper and his rivals navigate this pivotal moment for North Carolina’s political landscape.
