Cooper Blames Funding Issues for Violent Crime
Former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has claimed that a lack of funding for law enforcement is a factor in the recent tragic murder of a Ukrainian refugee. This comes as he runs to replace retired Republican Senator Tom Tillis.
Cooper expressed his condolences over the brutal death of Iryna Zarutska, an incident that has sparked concerns among the community since her victimization on August 22. He remarked, “It’s a horrible tragedy and we must do everything we can to keep people safe.” In a post on X, he suggested that some politicians view this terrible situation as merely a point to score in their political agenda, particularly those who have supported budget cuts for law enforcement in North Carolina.
The alleged murderer, 34-year-old DeCarlos Brown, had a troubling history of 14 previous arrests for various crimes leading up to the incident, including armed robbery and felony theft.
After activity on this issue escalated, Cooper took the opportunity to direct some criticism towards his Republican opponent, Michael Whatley. “As Attorney General and governor, I have dedicated my career to ensuring that violent criminals remain incarcerated,” he mentioned in another X post. He continued, urging the GOP to take funding for law enforcement seriously.
In response to Cooper’s statements, some conservative commentators have expressed outrage. One Fox contributor, CJ Pearson, asserted that it was unfair for Cooper to point fingers at the police when the suspect had been arrested multiple times yet was still on the streets. Others echoed this sentiment, criticizing both Cooper and Attorney General Josh Stein for what they perceive as a failure to take responsibility for the ongoing issues with crime and public safety.
As the conversation around safety and funding continues, it’s clear that this tragedy has ignited important discussions about the effectiveness of law enforcement and public policy. People are left wondering: what more can be done to prevent such tragedies?
