Royals pay tribute to Terrance Gore who passed away unexpectedly at 34

Before their home opener against the Twins on Monday, the Royals took a moment to honor the late Terrence Gore, an MLB speedster who passed away in February at just 34 years old.

With a packed crowd of 39,320 at Kauffman Stadium, everyone united for a moment of silence to remember the former Royals outfielder and pinch runner, who contributed to the team’s World Series win in 2015.

Over his career, Gore played for the Cubs, Dodgers, Braves, and concluded his time in the big leagues with the Mets in 2022. He was also part of the Dodgers’ championship team in 2020.

Additionally, he was remembered in Atlanta over the weekend, where the Braves held a moment of silence with his family present.

Royals general manager JJ Piccolo expressed his sadness, saying, “It’s very tragic to lose a player at 34 years old,” and emphasized that the tribute was for his family. “It’ll be fun for his kids to be at the game,” he noted, mentioning how involved Gore was with youth baseball.

After the moment of remembrance, the Royals welcomed Terrence’s wife, Britney, and their three children onto the field.

Piccolo greeted the Gore family, presenting Britney with flowers and then cradling the youngest child, Skylyn. They all faced the mound as Zane, the oldest son, threw out the first pitch to Alex Gordon, a former teammate and Royals Hall of Famer.

Zane’s pitch was a heartfelt moment in honor of his father during the Royals’ first home game since his passing.

Tragically, Mr. Gore died from complications following what was supposed to be a routine appendectomy, as announced by his wife at the time.

Throughout his eight seasons in the majors, Gore was primarily known for his pinch-running abilities, with a total of 43 stolen bases and only nine caught attempts in his regular season career. He also stole five bases in six postseason attempts.

On Monday, the Royals secured a 3-1 victory against the Twins.
