Republican Lawmakers Address SNAP Fraud Ahead of Midterms
Members of the Republican Study Committee (RSC) are emphasizing the importance of protecting taxpayer-funded food assistance programs from fraud as the midterm elections approach. This follows a federal enforcement operation that revealed nearly $42 million in fraud related to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
In discussions with Breitbart News, several lawmakers, including Reps. Rob Wittman (R-VA), Glenn Grothman (R-WI), Michael Guest (R-MS), and RSC Chairman August Pfluger (R-TX), highlighted their commitment to combating SNAP fraud. They stressed the need to safeguard taxpayer dollars and ensure that federal food assistance effectively reaches those in need.
“I remain committed to protecting food assistance for vulnerable Americans while ensuring programs like SNAP are accountable and sustainable,” Wittman stated. He expressed his disapproval of the reported $42 million in fraud and commended the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud for their efforts in securing taxpayer dollars and ensuring resources reach those who truly need them.
Grothman added, “Every taxpayer dollar stolen through SNAP fraud undermines the program’s mission of helping eligible Americans put food on the table. Democrats have neglected to prioritize fraud prevention, leaving taxpayer dollars exposed to abuse. I appreciate the White House Task Force for enhancing accountability and protecting these funds. Eliminating fraud helps maintain assistance for eligible Americans, and the savings should assist in reducing the federal deficit.”
Guest noted, “More than 350,000 Mississippians rely on SNAP, and safeguarding access for those in need is crucial. However, fraud diverts taxpayer dollars from our neighbors whom this program is designed to support. The $42 million in SNAP fraud uncovered recently could have provided assistance to nearly 220,000 Americans for a month, which is more than half of Mississippi’s SNAP recipients. I will keep striving to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse within our federal government.”
Pfluger expressed his concern, saying, “SNAP exists so families can put food on the table, and every dollar stolen by a fraudster essentially takes a meal from those who have nowhere else to turn. Thanks to Vice President Vance and the White House Task Force on Fraud, almost $42 million in SNAP fraud has been detected in just seven weeks, and the perpetrators are about to learn that their spree is over. No American should go hungry just so a thief can thrive.”
The lawmakers’ comments came after the Justice Department announced on October 21 that a nationwide enforcement operation targeted nearly $45 million in government fraud, with close to $42 million tied to SNAP. This operation, which started on September 1, involved 13 U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Utah Attorney General’s Office and led to actions against over 40 defendants. According to the DOJ, the SNAP funds in question could have provided food assistance to around 220,000 Americans for October, based on fiscal year 2026 USDA data.
The cases included a reported $29.7 million scheme involving stolen SNAP account information at food stores in Chicago, alongside a Georgia case linked to rapper Mercedes New involving about $4.4 million in stolen benefits. Other investigations addressed fraudulent benefit applications, SNAP trafficking, the resale of infant formula bought with stolen benefits, and the exploitation of vulnerable recipients. Attorney General Todd Blanche remarked that these schemes “siphoned millions from taxpayers and robbed struggling Americans of the benefits they rely on.”
On October 21, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also announced a nationwide operation targeting illegal aliens accused of fraudulently acquiring SNAP benefits. DHS disclosed that five individuals arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), including nationals from Cuba and Haiti, marked the start of a broader crackdown. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin affirmed the administration’s commitment to “going after all these thieves and bringing them to justice.”
