Rubio Meets with Zelensky at Munich Security Conference

At the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed Ukraine’s security with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. He emphasized that President Trump is eager for a resolution that would finally put an end to the ongoing conflict.

Rubio shared his thoughts on X, noting, “I met with the President of Ukraine @ZelenskyyUa about Ukraine’s security and deepening defense and economic cooperation.” He also included a photo of their handshake, reinforcing his message about Trump’s commitment to resolving the crisis.

Earlier that same day, Zelenskiy mentioned that he had been in discussions with both Trump and Rubio. Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner expressed optimism about the upcoming tripartite talks in Geneva, suggesting they might yield positive results.

Zelensky commented on X, saying, “Prior to the tripartite meeting in Geneva, I met with President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. We hope the talks will be truly productive.” He also indicated that they had discussed recent developments from talks in Abu Dhabi.

“Not everything can be shared over the phone. Our negotiating team will present Ukraine’s position next week,” he added, highlighting the importance of direct dialogue. Following the Abu Dhabi meeting, Zelenskiy pointed out that the U.S. has urged a peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv by a June deadline.

The Ukrainian president mentioned, “The United States has proposed to the parties to end the war by the beginning of this summer and will likely push for adherence to this timeline.” He later expressed gratitude for the U.S.’s consistently supportive stance and for the assistance provided by Trump and his administration.

Rubio also addressed the topic of peace between Ukraine and Russia during his discussions with G7 officials at the conference, underscoring ongoing efforts to promote stability not just in Ukraine, but in other global hotspots too.

In his post, Rubio noted, “Met with @G7 counterparts in Munich to advance @POTUS’ vision of pursuing peace through power.” This suggests a broader strategy that encompasses various international issues.

Looking ahead, trilateral negotiations between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine are set to commence in Geneva this coming Tuesday.
