Arrival of Cuban Dissident in Miami

Cuban artist and dissident Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara has reportedly reached Miami, Florida, after being released from prison in Cuba with the stipulation that he leave the country.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked that Otero Alcantara’s five-year prison sentence was not only arbitrary but also an infringement on free speech. He emphasized that the artist’s only supposed “crime” was refusing to remain silent and using his art to advocate for the basic freedoms that Cubans have lacked for nearly seventy years.

“Otero Alcantara’s only ‘crime’ was to refuse to be silent and to use his art to demand everyday basic freedoms that Cubans have been denied for almost 70 years,” Rubio stated.

Otero Alcantara is a prominent figure in the San Isidro Movement, a collective of Cuban artists, journalists, and academics pushing for freedom of expression and democracy in a nation under communist rule for a long time.

“The San Isidro Movement, which he helped found, was a beacon of hope for a generation of Cubans who refused to live under oppression,” Rubio continued. “The regime’s fear of Cubans who daily speak the truth of living under communism was demonstrated by their vileness in imprisoning Otero Alcantara.” He added that for wanting a free Cuba, Otero Alcantara faced harassment, detention, and now, exile.

Otero Alcantara was taken into custody during the widespread anti-government protests in 2021 and spent five years imprisoned. Following his recent release, his friends and supporters posted on social media that he was let go on the condition he exit the island.

“Today, Luis wants to live again, restart his project and recover the time that was stolen from him. He also wants to continue imagining and striving for freedom for Cuba,” a post read.

Rubio not only spotlighted Otero Alcantara’s case but also addressed the significant number of political prisoners still in Cuba, asserting that the Trump administration stands by the Cuban people in their quest for freedom.

“The Trump Administration remains committed to the Cuban people’s pursuit of freedom from tyranny and support for democracy, prosperity, and fundamental freedoms. We call for the immediate release of the more than 700 political prisoners unjustly held by the regime,” he stated.
