Visa Suspension for Truck Drivers Following Fatal Florida Crash
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Thursday that the issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers will be paused. This decision follows a tragic incident in Florida, where an illegal immigrant truck driver, Haljinder Singh, is accused of causing a crash that killed three people.
Rubio mentioned in a post that public safety is a major concern. He pointed out that the increase in foreign drivers operating large trucks on American roads poses risks to lives and threatens the income of American truckers.
Investigation into Singh’s Licenses
The investigation into how Singh acquired his commercial driver’s license has gained momentum since the fatal crash. According to reports, Singh, who entered the US illegally, was driving his commercial truck on the Florida Turnpike when he attempted a dangerous maneuver that resulted in the tragic accident.
Authorities stated that during the incident, Singh’s trailer jackknifed, colliding with a minivan and resulting in the death of all three passengers in the minivan. Moreover, it was revealed that Singh hadn’t passed the necessary English and road tests to obtain his commercial driver’s license.
Background of Haljinder Singh
Singh, a 28-year-old from India, was granted a full-term commercial driver’s license in Washington in July 2023, despite not being legally eligible. He also received a restricted license in California in 2024.
The situation has escalated into a heated exchange between California Governor Gavin Newsom and officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Newsom’s office stated that Singh had obtained a work permit during former President Donald Trump’s administration.
Further Developments
DHS Secretary of Public Affairs, Tricia McLaughlin, countered that Singh’s permit was denied under Trump in September 2020 but was later approved under the Biden administration in June 2021. Singh is currently facing multiple charges, including three counts of vehicular homicide, as he is extradited from California to Florida.
