US Sanctions Nicaraguan Officials for Human Rights Abuses
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Saturday that the Trump administration has decided to impose sanctions on high-ranking Nicaraguan officials due to alleged human rights violations.
Rubio specifically named Deputy Interior Minister Luis Roberto Cañas Novoa, highlighting his involvement in “gross human rights violations” under President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo’s regime. This move is part of an ongoing effort to hold the administration accountable for its actions.
“The Trump administration continues to hold Murillo Ortega’s dictatorship accountable for its brutal human rights violations against the Nicaraguan people,” Rubio mentioned. He reiterated the importance of naming individuals like Cañas Noboa in this context.
The sanctions were issued under Section 7031(c), which prevents foreign officials and their families from entering the United States if they’re implicated in significant corruption or human rights abuses. The State Department has accused the Ortega Murillo government of arbitrary arrests, torture, and extrajudicial killings in connection with the mass protests that erupted in April 2018.
According to the State Department, “Nearly eight years ago, the dictatorship of Rosario Murillo and Daniel Ortega unleashed a wave of brutal repression against Nicaraguans who braved the regime’s growing tyranny, corruption, and abuses.” These sanctions serve to mark the anniversary of the protests that resulted in over 325 deaths.
A UN-backed panel previously assessed the Nicaraguan government’s actions as systematic abuses, indicating these might qualify as crimes against humanity, particularly after the increased suppression of political dissent following the 2018 protests.
The government of Nicaragua, however, has openly disputed these claims.
This latest designation follows a string of actions by the US aimed at the Ortega Murillo government. Earlier this year, five additional Nicaraguan officials were sanctioned for their roles in similar oppressive actions, including the targeting of clergy and media personnel.
Recently, the State Department also placed sanctions on individuals and companies involved in Nicaragua’s gold sector, including Ortega and Murillo’s sons, citing the regime’s use of this industry to gather foreign currency and launder assets.
The ongoing sanctions are a part of the US’s commitment to hold the Nicaraguan government accountable for its actions. Attempts to obtain comments from the Nicaraguan government and its embassy in the US have yet to yield a response.
In recent months, the Trump administration has adopted a more assertive approach within the Western Hemisphere, including a successful operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
Additionally, the US has executed several military actions aimed at combating suspected drug trafficking in the region, reflecting a broader strategy focused on enhancing regional security and drug enforcement.
