Rubio Warns of Consequences if Iran Pursues Nuclear Weapons
On Sunday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned that a commitment by Iran to develop nuclear weapons could jeopardize the current administration.
During his appearance on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Rubio emphasized the dangers posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions, stating that if a strike on Iran’s capabilities leads to their acquisition of nuclear weapons, “the administration is at risk.”
“Ultimately, if Iran insists on becoming a nuclear weapons power, it endangers the regime itself,” he remarked. “I believe that firmly. Should they pursue such a path, it may very well signal the end of the administration.”
Rubio also pointed out that the recent military action is not the sole factor affecting Iran’s nuclear program.
“Last night’s strike was not just a standalone event; the Israelis have done remarkable work prior to this, and they are definitely providing technical support,” he noted.
He clarified that the U.S. is not against Iran’s use of nuclear energy but opposes any move toward nuclear weapons development.
“If their goal is to operate a nuclear reactor for energy, they could achieve this without enriching uranium, as many countries do,” he explained.
However, he indicated that if Iran seeks to maintain a secretive program hidden away, it will pose significant challenges. “If they want a covert program buried in the mountains, that raises serious red flags,” Rubio said.
He questioned whether Iran is genuinely pursuing a civilian nuclear agenda, suggesting that involvement from other nations may also play a role.
“If what they aim for is a secret program disguised as a civilian operation, attempting to build a bomb would lead to problems—not only for us but for many other nations too,” he added.
The latest airstrikes targeted three Iranian nuclear facilities located at Natanz, Esfahan, and Fordau, which are situated in mountainous regions. Reports indicate that six “Bunkerbuster” bombs were dropped on Fordow, while over 20 Tomahawk missiles were launched at the other two locations.
This bombing signifies a significant U.S. involvement in the ongoing Middle East conflict that Israel initiated with its airstrike on Iran on June 13th.
