Rubio points out problem with potential Harris-Newsom ticket as Biden reels

With President Biden reeling from calls to drop out of the race, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) on Sunday pointed out problems with the potential pairing of Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom.

Rubio, who is considered a leading candidate to be former President Trump’s running mate, was asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” whether he would move from Florida or resign from his Senate seat if he became the vice presidential nominee.

CNN host Dana Bash pointed out that the US Constitution says electors cannot vote for president and vice president from the same state – both Rubio and Trump live in Florida.

“That would be presumptuous… I have no idea who he’s going to pick,” Rubio said, “but I think Americans will have peace of mind knowing that when Kamala Harris becomes the nominee, she can’t pick any other candidate.” [California Gov.] “I chose Gavin Newsom because I don’t think our country can allow the crazy policies of two guys from California to become the law of the land.”

Rubio said he plans to work with the Trump campaign “in some capacity” over the next three to four months until Election Day, including in the Senate.

“Either way, what I care about right now, and what I care about the most, is we can’t have four more years of the way things have been for the last four years. I’m going to help in any way I can, but it’s up to Trump and his campaign to make announcements or not, and I certainly can’t make any announcements this morning,” Rubio said.

Harris’ background as a prosecutor could complicate efforts to replace Biden with a Democratic candidate.

Newsom, a key surrogate for the Biden campaign, has been campaigning on the president’s behalf in the battleground states of Michigan and Pennsylvania in recent days.

Newsom has repeatedly dodged questions about whether he would run for president if Biden drops out of the race and Democratic delegates hold an open convention. It will be held in Chicago next month.
