Rubio Discusses Ceasefire Options with Lavrov
During a meeting on Thursday, Secretary of State Marko Rubio conversed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about potential new ideas for a ceasefire in Ukraine. This meeting lasted around 50 minutes.
Rubio, who serves as President Trump’s national security adviser, noted that Lavrov shared different perspectives on peace negotiations regarding Ukraine. “I think this is a different approach. I’m not saying it’s a guarantee of peace, but I’ll bring this back to the President today,” he remarked.
He explained that they exchanged ideas and comments that he plans to relay to Washington later that night. “There might be some avenues to explore here,” Rubio added.
The Secretary of State mentioned that the administration would keep engaging with various political factions, highlighting that he had conveyed Trump’s frustrations about the stagnant peace negotiations with Russia. “The president is quite clear—he’s disappointed and frustrated with the Russian side’s rigidity in resolving this conflict,” Rubio stated after their discussion. “We are hoping for a change and will continue to get involved wherever we see potential to contribute positively.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry characterized the exchange as “substantial and honest,” covering the situation in Ukraine, as well as other global concerns, including Iran and Syria.
After the meeting, both officials indicated their commitment to seeking a peaceful solution and reiterated the importance of improving economic and humanitarian ties, emphasizing the normalization of bilateral relations.
This meeting occurred at the Southeast Asian Regional Forum Association and marked the second time Rubio has met with Lavrov since taking on his role as the top U.S. diplomat. This dialogue came amid heightened public criticism from Trump towards Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump has remarked that the war “should never have happened” and that many lives are being lost unnecessarily. He expressed frustration with the situation, emphasizing that fault lies with Putin, whose actions have proven counterproductive.
While Trump seeks an end to the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe, the results thus far have been limited, particularly as Russia seems unyielding to these demands.
Recent attacks saw Russia deploying 728 drones against Ukraine earlier this week, with over 300 being Shahed drones, targeting areas like the city of Rusk in the northwest.
In a conversation with Trump the previous Thursday, Putin seemed to indicate “no progress” was being made towards a ceasefire, which left the president feeling “disappointed” as he perceived a lack of genuine intent from Putin to halt hostilities.
The meeting between Rubio and Lavrov followed the U.S. resuming the supply of defensive weapons to Ukraine, a decision made after the Department of Defense had earlier paused deliveries of air defense missiles and ammunition. The President underscored the necessity of these supplies for Ukraine’s self-defense amidst ongoing Russian attacks.
