Former Bengals Star Rudi Johnson Shares Inspiring Message Before His Passing

Former Cincinnati Bengals running back Rudi Johnson sent an uplifting message to a young athlete in Virginia days before his tragic passing, reportedly by suicide. He was 45 years old.

Johnson, who played high school football in Chesterfield, was honored at a ceremony on September 18 for his achievements as a Thomas Dale High School alum and standout in the Chesterfield Quarterback League.

During the ceremony, Johnson, reflecting on his journey, expressed gratitude to his coaches and teammates. He emphasized the importance of dreaming big, staying focused, and never giving up. “I want to give a special shout-out to all those who came before me, the graduates of Thomas Dale High School and the Etrick Trojan,” he mentioned in a video from the event.

Rudi Johnson was drafted by the Bengals in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft after a notable career at Auburn. He played seven seasons with the Bengals and the Detroit Lions, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2004.

Describing Johnson, Bengals President Mike Brown remarked, “Rudi was a great person for us and a fantastic running back. He was reliable, productive, and well-liked among teammates. Everyone saw him as a dear friend.” Over his career with the Bengals, Johnson participated in 81 games, achieving impressive stats like 1,454 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in the 2004 season, which marked his only Pro Bowl selection.

Reports indicate that he passed away shortly after midnight on a Tuesday, and it was confirmed by police that his death was by suicide. Johnson’s loss has deeply impacted the Cincinnati community and the sports world at large.
