Russell Dickerson Reflects on His Small-Town Background
Country star Russell Dickerson, who hails from Tennessee, has gained popularity with songs like “Yours” and “Blue Tacoma.” Over the last decade, he has carved out a successful place in country music, performing at various venues, including the upcoming Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
In a recent interview, Dickerson shared that his early experiences were deeply rooted in small-town traditions. He recalls a childhood filled with rodeos and tractor pulls rather than movie nights. “We didn’t go to the movies that much. We went to rodeos, we pulled tractors—that was my redneck pastime as a kid,” he said.
This background is significant now as he gets ready to perform at one of the most renowned rodeos in the country. “It’s incredible to be able to bring it full circle at RodeoHouston and play my music there,” he stated, noting the personal importance of this event not just for his career but also for sharing it with his family.
“I’ll definitely bring my oldest son Remington,” he mentioned, expressing anticipation for the show. “This is the biggest show of my life, and he needs to see it. I think he’ll flip out.”
Recently, Dickerson participated in a surprise performance in Times Square, promoting RodeoHouston and giving New Yorkers a taste of Western culture. He remarked, “I’ve never seen so many cowboy hats and boots stomping through Times Square. It’s such a beautiful sight. Country music is so universal.”
For Dickerson, the invitation to perform at RodeoHouston is a significant milestone. “I remember when I got the call; I was in the gym, and my manager was there, too. I thought, ‘This is crazy.’ They told us at the same time that I’d been invited, and I just thought, ‘Oh, it’s a bucket list thing.’ It’s a real honor,” he reflected.
As he navigates one of the most promising years of his career, Dickerson’s song “Happen to Me,” which was released in March 2025, gained unexpected success, expanding his audience. He expressed gratitude for the support, saying the response was “completely out of nowhere.”
He will join a star-studded lineup at RodeoHouston, featuring artists like Chris Stapleton, Kelly Clarkson, Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, and many others on March 5, 2026.
