Russell Westbrook’s Next Move After Nuggets Dismissal
Russell Westbrook finds himself in an interesting situation after opting out of his contract with the Nuggets for the 2025-26 season, entering free agency as a result. Mark Stein reported that Westbrook turned down a $3.47 million deal with the team.
The 36-year-old guard had a decent year, averaging 13.3 points over 75 regular-season games. However, his relationship with the team was complicated, with some suggesting that his presence contributed to the surprising firing of coach Michael Malone.
Notably, both Malone and General Manager Calvin Booth were let go shortly before the regular season concluded, which stemmed from tensions within the organization. It was suggested that Westbrook’s situation might have sparked significant issues within the team’s dynamics.
Some within the franchise were reportedly unhappy with what they perceived as preferential treatment toward the nine-time All-Star. Additionally, there were calls for more playing time for second-year guard Jalen Pickett.
Reflecting on the season, Westbrook’s performance in a crucial game against the Timberwolves was particularly criticized, as it led to the Nuggets securing a No. 4 seed rather than the more advantageous third seed.
According to Athletic’s Sam Amick and Tony Jones, Malone’s insistence on backing Westbrook—despite frustrations on and off the court—had begun to erode his credibility with key players. There seemed to be a palpable disconnect, with some feeling that Westbrook’s Hall of Fame status shouldn’t exempt him from scrutiny.
In terms of playoff performance, Westbrook averaged 13.8 points in the first-round series against the Clippers but only managed 9.9 points in a second-round exit to the Thunder.
Now, as he embarks on what could be his seventh team in his 18th season, it’s clear that Westbrook has had quite the journey. He spent over a decade with the Thunder but has struggled to remain with any of his following five teams for a full two-season stretch.
