Buffalo – Russell Wilson’s Unexpected Start with the Giants

The anticipation around Russell Wilson’s debut with the Giants came sooner than many expected. In a surprising move, Wilson and the Giants’ healthy first-team players will kick off their preseason against the Bills this Saturday at 1 PM.

Head coach Brian Daboll kept his game plan under wraps until a walkthrough practice on Thursday. Wilson will take the field without his key left tackle, Andrew Thomas, who has been sidelined during training camp. This means backup James Hudson will be taking on a tough workload in his absence.

Moreover, right guard Evan Neal is not expected to participate due to an injury, although the majority of the offensive line should be ready to go.

Neal’s situation is unfortunate; he really could use the preseason snaps as he transitions from right tackle and attempts to settle into a new role, moving away from his previous partner, Greg Van Roten.

The decision to start Wilson is intriguing, especially since Malik Narvers might not be on the field.

During training camp, Wilson seemed to develop a strong rapport with Neighbors, who is still grappling with a toe injury that kept him out all spring. As a seasoned 14-year veteran, Wilson has navigated the preseason in various ways—sometimes playing extensively, other times sitting out.

This is a chance for him to collaborate with new offensive coordinator Mike Kafka in real-game scenarios. Wilson has shown interest in participating during the preseason, but Daboll insists that choices are based solely on what he believes is best for the team.

It remains to be seen whether veteran Jameis Winston or rookie Jaxson Dart will be the first QB off the bench. Winston holds the number two spot on the unofficial depth chart, yet Dart has been gaining more second-team reps throughout training camp.

Reports of Wilson’s start first emerged from northjersey.com.
