President Donald Trump said Friday that Ukraine and Russia were “very close to a deal” one day after a productive conversation.
Trump challenged the true society shortly after landing in Rome, sharing details and proposing a meeting with top Russian officials.
“We just landed in Rome. It’s a good day of meetings and meetings between Russia and Ukraine. They are very close to the deal and both sides should meet to “finish it” at a very high level,” Trump wrote. “Most of the key points have been agreed.”
“Stop the bloodshed now. We are where we need to promote the end of this cruel and meaningless war!” he added.
Trump pointed out earlier that day that he would meet world leaders during his time in Rome for Pope Francis’ funeral
“We’re going to meet a lot of foreign leaders. They want to meet,” Trump said. “The trade deals are going very well. I think Russia and Ukraine are coming, I think they’re very vulnerable. And I think Iran is going very well.
Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky is also planning to attend the funeral of the late Pope, although it is unclear whether Trump will talk to him.
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with the US special envoy of Middle Eastern Steve Witkov on Friday. Witkov has played an important role in diplomatic negotiations and peace efforts.
There have been multiple obstacles to peace negotiations this week. On Thursday, Russia fired a strike in Kiev, killing 12 people and injured about 90 more. On Friday, a Russian general was assassinated in an explosion outside Moscow. And while no one claims responsibility, the Kremlin Condemnation Ukraine attacks.
