Russia and Ukraine Exchange Fatal Attacks During Peace Talks

Russia’s Attacks on Ukraine Intensify Amid Peace Talks

KYIV, Ukraine – Recently, Russia unleashed a series of attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals and damaging city infrastructure. In response, Ukrainian forces reportedly killed three people in southern Russia, leading to damage in residential areas.

This escalation coincides with renewed efforts by the United States to find a resolution to the nearly four-year conflict. U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll held extensive discussions with Russian officials in Abu Dhabi, signaling a fresh approach to peace talks.

Driscoll, who is relatively new to the U.S. negotiating team, is spearheading efforts to broker a peace deal with Russia. While a U.S. official, who requested anonymity, provided no specifics on the discussions, there seems to be acknowledgment from all parties involved that reaching an agreement to cease hostilities is a priority.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy mentioned that discussions from talks in Geneva had yielded some actionable measures for ending the conflict. He expressed intentions to address unresolved, sensitive matters with President Trump.

In a post on a social media platform, senior adviser Rustem Umerov indicated the ongoing nature of these negotiations. However, Russian officials have kept mute on the proposed peace plan.

European leaders caution, though, that the path to peace is likely to be lengthy and fraught with challenges.

According to Zelenskyy, the recent Russian assault involved 22 types of missiles and over 460 drones, leading to the disruption of water, electricity, and heating services in parts of Kyiv. Video clips shared online depicted a fire sweeping through a multi-story building in the Dniprovsky district.

The city’s mayor reported two fatalities and five injuries in Dniprovsky, with additional significant damage noted in the Pechersky district.

A resident from the affected area, Lyubov Petrivna, 90, described devastating conditions in her apartment due to the air raid, claiming that everything was destroyed and “glass rained down on me.” She expressed skepticism regarding the peace discussions, stating, “No one will do anything. Putin will not stop until he finishes us.”

In a secondary wave of attacks, Kyiv’s Svyatoshiny district saw four fatalities and three injuries from strikes targeting non-residential buildings. Nearby countries, such as Romania and Moldova, also reported minor drone intrusions into their airspace.

Ukraine’s Energy Ministry confirmed that some energy infrastructure had been targeted, although specifics were not provided. Meanwhile, six people, including two children, were hurt in a Russian strike aimed at energy and port facilities in Odessa.

Conversely, a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s Rostov region led to three deaths and eight injuries, damaging various structures, according to the local governor.

In response, Russia claimed to have intercepted 249 Ukrainian drones overnight across its territories and Crimea, with considerable defensive measures being reported over the Black Sea.

This drone attack coincided with discussions on a peace plan held recently in Switzerland, where Ukrainian representatives described the talks as “very constructive.” Yet, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that the Russian government had not received any details regarding the latest U.S. peace proposal.

French President Emmanuel Macron remarked that while the U.S. plan seemed to move in a favorable direction, it should not lead to conditions perceived as a surrender, which could enable Russia to resort to warfare at a later time.

Speaking with broadcaster RTL, Macron emphasized the need for strong security provisions for Ukraine and cautioned against limiting Ukraine’s military capabilities to defend itself during peacetime. He expressed a desire for peace but underscored that it should not come at the cost of Ukraine’s sovereignty, stating, “There’s only one person who doesn’t want peace, and that’s Russia.”
