Russia Launches Major Drone and Missile Attacks in Ukraine

In a significant escalation, Russia launched around 500 drones and 20 missiles overnight in Ukraine, marking the largest attack of the ongoing conflict, according to sources in Kyiv. The Ukrainian Air Force reported on Monday that they managed to intercept 199 missiles and a substantial number of the 479 drones deployed during the nighttime assault. Remarkably, they claim only 10 drones managed to hit their targets, with just one reported injury.

The bombings predominantly affected the central and western regions of Ukraine. Interestingly, these nighttime drone attacks, which are hard to track in the dark, often start late in the evening and continue into the morning hours.

Furthermore, Russian actions have raised concerns as civilian areas have been targeted with drone strikes throughout the war. As atrocities mount, the United Nations estimated that over 12,000 Ukrainian civilians have lost their lives. However, Russia insists it only targets military sites.

Despite the mounting violence, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated on Monday that Russia remains willing to honor the agreement established in Istanbul concerning a prisoner exchange and the return of deceased soldiers’ remains. He noted, though, that progress on certain aspects of the agreement has been lacking.

The prisoner exchange proposal, which aims to swap at least 1,200 individuals, stems from direct negotiations that took place in Istanbul earlier this month.

As the war enters its fourth year, the exchange of prisoners and the repatriation of bodies seem to be among the limited points of consensus between the conflicting parties, even as broader discussions appear far from resolution.
