Russia Continues Bombing Campaign on Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — One man was killed in a Russian cruise missile attack on infrastructure in western Ukraine’s Lviv region, authorities said Sunday.

The attack destroyed buildings and caused a fire, Governor Maksim Kozytsky wrote on the social media app Telegram. He said rescue operations were underway.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine’s Odesa region on Sunday, debris from a downed Russian drone caused a fire at an energy facility, temporarily leaving thousands without power, Governor Ole Kipel said. The attack left about 170,000 homes temporarily without power, according to DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private electricity company.

The Ukrainian Air Force announced that it shot down 9 of 11 Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles and 9 of 14 cruise missiles launched by Russia during the night.

In recent days, Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, causing significant damage in multiple regions.

Ukrainian energy company Centrenergo announced on Saturday that the Zmyiv thermal power plant, one of the largest thermal power plants in eastern Kharkiv, was completely destroyed following Russian shelling last week. Blackout plans were still in place for about 120,000 people in the region, where 700,000 people lost power after power plants were damaged on March 22.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, 10 Czech-made Vampire rockets landed in the Russian border region of Belgorod on Sunday. Local governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said a fire broke out after the attack and one woman was injured.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree marking the start of the annual spring conscription season, officially recruiting 150,000 conscripts.

Russia’s parliament raised the upper age limit for conscription from 27 to 30 in July 2023, a move seen as part of the country’s military expansion amid the fighting in Ukraine. All Russian men are required to complete one year of national service, but many avoid conscription by taking advantage of deferments granted to students and people with chronic illnesses.
