Russia Exploiting Open Borders Organizations and Smugglers to Undermine Europe

Bulgaria Warns of Collaboration Between Left-Wing Groups and Smugglers

Bulgaria has issued a warning about left-wing groups advocating open borders allegedly working alongside smuggling networks and Russian intelligence to promote illegal migration into Europe.

Bulgarian Interior Minister Daniel Mitov claims that Moscow is leveraging its intelligence services to assist traffickers and “neo-Marxist” organizations in spotting vulnerabilities in Europe’s borders, ostensibly to facilitate the smuggling of migrants. He also mentioned that these groups are being trained on how to evade deportation.

Mitov asserted that Bulgaria has gathered evidence linking Russian foreign intelligence directly to smuggling rings that are facilitating illegal entries into Europe and the UK, an effort aimed at destabilizing the West.

“The surge of illegal immigrants serves as a tool for hostile regimes to undermine the European Union and the United Kingdom,” Mitov stated. “Their goal is to destabilize the welfare system. And, of course, by smuggling radicalized individuals, they create security challenges for us.”

The minister further noted that Bulgaria is examining the involvement of various far-left pro-migrant NGOs, suggesting that these organizations might be unwittingly aiding Russia’s strategy to disrupt Europe.

“They represent a neo-Marxist agenda, trying to rationalize their actions through some philosophical or ideological lens. Essentially, it’s about rallying the world’s underprivileged to establish their status here, promoting absolute freedom of movement and the abolition of borders,” Mitov explained.

“Thus, we face a dilemma with NGOs that, perhaps without realizing it, are engaging in the operations of hostile entities and criminal networks that are smuggling people into the EU and the UK.”

This situation has become increasingly critical for Bulgaria following its formal integration into the European Union’s passport-free Schengen area. Mitov emphasized that the 161-mile border with Türkiye has now turned into the new “gateway to Europe.”

“It’s time to construct a house that safeguards our inner freedom. A house needs walls, not a fortress. Strong walls and a gate for guests,” he remarked.

The governments of Recep Erdogan in Turkey and Vladimir Putin in Russia have been accused of manipulating illegal immigration as a strategic weapon in their conflicts with Europe. In response, EU nations like Greece and Poland are now erecting border walls to prevent unauthorized entries.

Poland, for example, has had to defend its borders against a surge of migrants reportedly orchestrated by Alexander Lukashenko’s regime in Belarus, which has been enticing individuals from the Middle East with offers of access to Germany and its generous welfare system.

Mitov’s comments precede an upcoming summit hosted in London, where European leaders, including Bulgaria’s, are expected to discuss strategies to combat illegal immigration from the Western Balkans.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is anticipated to address plans to dissolve a previous agreement with Rwanda and instead consider arrangements with non-EU partners in the region to establish “return points” for those whose asylum claims have been unsuccessful.

UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper responded to Mitov’s statements, noting, “It’s evident that the drive behind illegal migration into Europe extends beyond organized crime to include hostile state actors aimed at destabilizing the continent.”

“The threat is palpable, increasing, and serious. We must enhance and deepen international collaboration to confront this issue together,” she added.
