Russia increasing assaults on Ukraine during an important week for peace discussions.

The Ukrainian military has indicated that Russia has intensified its fighting activities despite what it termed as a “very important week” for peace discussions, as stated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Reports reveal that Ukrainian forces faced 177 combat encounters in just one day, including 91 airstrikes targeting Ukrainian troops and communities. Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a three-day ceasefire next month to coincide with the 80th anniversary of World War II’s victory.

“Although they made a significant announcement regarding the ceasefire for the May holiday, the occupiers have markedly ramped up their military efforts,” said General Oleksandr Silsky, head of Ukraine’s military, in a statement on Wednesday.

On NBC’s “Meet the Press” this past Sunday, Rubio expressed that the peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia isn’t finalized yet but emphasized that the upcoming week is crucial for ongoing efforts. “We were trying to gauge how close we are last week, and it’s close enough to warrant continued mediation,” he shared.

“This week is going to be pivotal. We need to figure out if this is a direction we want to keep investing our time in, or if we should focus on other matters equally or perhaps more important,” he added. He acknowledged the progress so far but noted that the final steps are often the hardest. “It needs to happen soon. If it doesn’t, we’re going to have to reconsider how we allocate our resources to this issue,” Rubio said.

In this context, the White House revealed that President Trump is eager to facilitate discussions between Putin and Ukraine, even considering additional sanctions against Russia. “Looking at satellite images showing chaos—a horrifying situation—it’s alarming,” Trump remarked during a cabinet meeting.

Over the weekend, he posted on social media, insisting that “this is Biden’s war, not mine.” He’s clearly vocalizing his concerns and thoughts on the matter.
