Major Air Attack on Ukraine’s Capital
On Sunday, Russia launched its largest air assault on Ukraine since the conflict began, targeting the capital, Kyiv, with drones and missiles. This severe attack resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, while smoke was seen rising from significant government buildings across the city.
Officials reported that Russia utilized a staggering 805 drones and various decoys during this assault. Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, confirmed that this marked the most extensive Russian drone strike since the full-scale invasion commenced.
In addition to drones, 13 different types of missiles were also fired. Ukrainian defenses managed to down 747 of the drones and four missiles, as per an Air Force statement.
Throughout Ukraine, nine missile strikes and 56 drone attacks hit 37 locations. Fragments from downed drones and missiles scattered across eight sites.
As an Associated Press reporter observed, smoke was seen billowing from the roof of a governmental building in Kyiv, although it was unclear if this was caused by a direct strike or debris from the attack.
Russia has typically refrained from striking government buildings in the city center, but this recent attack seems to have crossed that line. The targeted building houses the Cabinet of Ministers and various ministers’ offices. Fire trucks and ambulances arrived promptly as police cordoned off the area.
Ukrainian officials reported that two individuals lost their lives and at least 17 others sustained injuries. Prime Minister Yulia Swilydenko expressed sorrow stating, “For the first time, government buildings have been damaged by enemy attacks.” She further noted, “We can restore the building, but not the lives lost.”
The two fatalities were identified as a mother and her three-month-old child, whose remains were recovered from the debris, as stated by Timur Tokachenko, head of Kyiv’s city government. Initially, the child’s age was misreported as one year.
At least ten locations in Kyiv were severely damaged, with specific mentions of a nine-storey complex in the Sviatoshynskyi district and a four-storey building in Darnytskyi district being direct targets.
This drone and missile strike marks the second of its kind against Kyiv within two weeks, even as optimism for peace talks seems to fade. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed a willingness to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while also urging increased sanctions against Russia, particularly targeting its oil and gas sectors.
