Russia Promises Retaliation After Ukraine's Bold Drone Attack on Airfield

Russia Responds to Ukrainian Drone Strikes

Russia has promised to “respond” to recent drone attacks by Ukraine targeting grounded strategic bombers. This comes as former President Donald Trump mentioned he attempted to dissuade Russian President Vladimir Putin from escalating the ongoing violence.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for Putin, labeled the drone strikes as a “terrorist attack” and indicated that Russia deems a military response appropriate. Over the weekend, Ukraine deployed a series of suicide drones concealed in modified shipping containers, aiming for a Russian air force base.

Ukrainian officials claim to have destroyed around 40 aircraft, including strategic bombers and reconnaissance planes. In contrast, Russia refutes these assertions, suggesting either that the drones missed their marks or that the damage inflicted was minimal. Analysis from American satellite images seems to place the truth more in the middle, estimating about 10 aircraft destroyed with others damaged.

In response to the drone strikes, Russia reacted strongly, designating the attack as “terrorism,” particularly criticizing simultaneous assaults on railway infrastructure.

Trump revealed this week that he had a conversation with Putin, discussing the drone strikes and Russia’s potential for revenge. He cited Putin’s assertion that retaliatory measures were necessary due to the attacks on Russian aircraft.

During a chat with German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, Trump elaborated, mentioning that he heard from Putin about the necessity for a response to Ukrainian actions and emphasized the need to avoid further escalation.

Following the drone strikes, there was a brief indication from Russia about reconsidering their participation in peace talks with Ukraine hosted in Turkey, although this stance shifted back. Russian state media relayed comments from Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, condemning the drone attacks as a significant provocation that might disrupt negotiations.

Peskov affirmed that Putin stands firm on the matter, describing the Ukrainian government as a “terrorist regime.”

On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of perpetuating violence and rejecting all peace efforts. In an address to the nation, he highlighted Russia’s readiness to kill and lamented the harsh realities this situation has created.

Zelensky also pointed out that the latest round of peace talks concluded without meaningful progress, criticizing Russia’s stance, which seems fixated on destruction rather than diplomacy.
