Russia Proposes to Accept Iranian Uranium to Progress Nuclear Agreement

Russia’s Proposal to Iran on Uranium Stockpiles

Russia has proposed converting Iran’s weapons-grade uranium reserves into fuel-grade material, potentially facilitating ongoing nuclear discussions between Iran and the United States, as reported by Reuters.

According to Russian Deputy Minister Sergei Lyabkov, the Kremlin is eager to reach an agreement that addresses Iran’s nuclear goals. Recently, talks between Tehran and Washington have stalled. Iran insists on maintaining some domestic production, while former President Trump has stated that enrichment can’t be part of any new deal.

Lyabkov mentioned, “We are prepared to support both Washington and Tehran, not just with negotiation ideas but also through exporting surplus nuclear materials from Iran, adapting them for reactor production.”

Currently, estimates suggest that Iran could develop nuclear weapons within just three weeks. Some reports highlight these capabilities as of February.

Russia has made it clear that it seeks to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, but it does not oppose a civilian nuclear program. Moscow remains a key ally of Iran and continues to support it, even amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Within the Trump administration, there are differences in opinion regarding the approach to Iran’s nuclear program. Some advisors advocate for intervention, while others prefer a more cautious diplomatic approach. On Tuesday, US Army Generals, including Michael “Eric” Kurira, discussed various strategies for addressing the situation, which may include military options.

Requests for comments from the Iranian and Russian Foreign Ministries went unanswered.
