Ukraine’s Defense in Pokrovsk Amid Ongoing Russian Offensives
Pokrovsk, once a vibrant city with around 60,000 residents in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, is now a key focal point for Russia’s offensive. This marks Moscow’s renewed invasion, the first in nearly three years.
Despite various tactics employed by Russian forces to breach Ukraine’s defenses, the Ukrainian military remains firm in its commitment to defending this strategically important city. Oleksandr Shirushkyi, the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, shared insights on the ongoing conflict.
“The front lines are extremely tense. The enemy is conducting significant offensive operations,” he noted. “They’ve concentrated a large number of troops in an effort to break through our defenses and seize control of the area.”
While Russian state media and social channels advertise that Pokrovsk has fallen and Ukrainians are surrounded, Shirushkyi asserts the opposite is true. Following a counterattack in September that caused around 13,000 casualties among invaders, Ukrainian forces regained over 165 square miles.
“They persistently depict this area on maps as if it’s under their control,” he explained. “This belief that the enemy is in full control and nearing victory is simply incorrect.”
Nonetheless, Moscow has mobilized roughly 150,000 troops towards Pokrovsk, including a robust mechanized unit and four marine brigades, out of about 700,000 Russian troops currently in Ukraine.
He emphasized that Russia aims to encircle Pokrovsk and nearby towns from multiple directions to cut supply lines and exclude civilians as part of their strategy to capture all of Donetsk.
As Moscow’s funding dwindles, particularly for non-commissioned officers and mercenaries, some analysts are questioning how long Russia can sustain this campaign without resorting to conscription, which could be politically detrimental for President Vladimir Putin.
“We aim to ensure that the number of personnel we gather remains equal to or fewer than the enemy’s losses,” noted Silsky. “They’ve been advancing aggressively for two months without significant outcomes.”
To ready themselves for the ongoing conflict, Ukrainians have spent considerable time reinforcing urban areas to mitigate the impact of heavy artillery.
“Defending in open spaces is fundamentally different than in urban settings,” Silsky stated. “Our cities can effectively resist substantial enemy forces.”
Moreover, Ukrainian forces face not just regular troops but also sabotage teams disrupting rear positions, with Kremlin intelligence attempting to foster mistrust both domestically and internationally.
“It’s a challenging game,” acknowledged the commander. “The fighting remains intense, and the enemy is continuously adjusting their tactics.”
Illustrating the significance of the situation, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited the front lines near Pokrovsk last week. He indicated that while Russia’s attempts to breach defenses have been unsuccessful, the struggle is still quite daunting for Ukrainian forces.
“The president’s visits provide a significant morale boost for troops,” Silsky emphasized, noting that it enhances their resolve to combat their adversaries.
To secure its position in this fight, Ukraine is leveraging its drone capabilities to target crucial aspects of Russia’s aerial operations, including command sites and the operators managing these drone systems.
“We must first dismantle the command locations from which the drones are deployed,” Silsky insisted, further highlighting the need for superior intelligence and long-range weaponry.
Kyiv is also ramping up its training programs, extending boot camps to six weeks, ensuring new recruits receive essential training in areas like electronic warfare, anti-drone tactics, and first aid.
Meanwhile, Shirushkyi continues to call on the global community for support, stressing the need for more weapons, missiles, air defense systems, and electronic warfare technologies to counter Russia’s relentless drone assaults on critical infrastructure.
“We require various types of missiles with different ranges and robust air defense systems,” he noted. “This remains our top priority.”
Despite the long odds, neither Russia’s sheer force nor information tactics have resulted in the swift victory they envisioned, and Ukraine’s resilience has imposed a heavy toll on Russian forces.
“Our strategies have significantly altered the tempo of this conflict,” remarked Shirushkyi.
