Russia Strikes Kharkiv in Ukraine, Resulting in Three Deaths

Kiev, Ukraine

A significant assault involving Russian drones and missiles targeted the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Saturday, resulting in at least three fatalities and 21 injuries, according to local officials. This attack, which included air-gliding bombs, marks a continuation of Russia’s intense campaign in the three-year conflict.

Recently, the Kremlin has faced embarrassment, particularly due to Ukraine’s astonishing drone strikes on military airfields deep within Russian territory.

As reported by the Ukrainian Air Force, overnight assaults from Russia involved 215 missiles and drones, with Ukrainian defenses successfully neutralizing 87 drones and seven missiles.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andri Sibikh noted that several other regions in Ukraine, such as Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, and Ternopil, also faced attacks.

“Ending the violence and destruction from Russia calls for increased pressure on Moscow and steps to bolster Ukraine’s position,” he stated.

No immediate response came from Moscow regarding the latest attack.

The mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, mentioned that the attack damaged 18 apartment buildings and 13 private homes, labeling it the “most powerful attack” since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

In two districts of the city, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov reported three missiles, five glide bombs, and 48 drones were involved in the assault, with the injured including two children—a boy and a 14-year-old girl.

This attack occurred just a day after one of the most intense barrages in Ukraine, which claimed at least six lives and injured about 80 people.

Efforts for a diplomatic resolution have seen two direct peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine’s delegations, but these talks have not produced significant progress. The two sides remain far apart on their demands.

In response to a potential stalemate, Ukraine offered an unconditional 30-day ceasefire and a meeting between President Vladimir Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. However, the Kremlin effectively dismissed the ceasefire proposal.

This week, former US President Donald Trump mentioned that Putin conveyed intentions to respond to Ukraine’s attacks on Russian forces, suggesting it might be more beneficial to “fight for a while” before exploring peace options. This comment somewhat diverges from his usual calls for war cessation, indicating a possible shift in his peace strategy.
