Russia Launches Major Attack on Ukraine

This month saw Russia’s largest assault on Ukraine, coinciding with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meetings with President Donald Trump and European leaders at the White House.

During this assault, there were indications that the eastern Donetsk region might be handed over in exchange for a ceasefire. This was suggested after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent discussion with Trump in Alaska, where he insisted that Ukraine relinquish Donetsk following the dispute ignited by Moscow’s invasion in February 2022. Trump later mentioned that he spoke to Putin about potentially arranging a meeting with Zelensky.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that on Monday night and into Tuesday, Russia unleashed 270 drones and 10 missiles, although they managed to intercept 230 drones and six missiles. Still, 40 drones and four missiles struck 16 locations, with debris landing in three different sites.

“Efforts were underway to further peace in Washington, while Moscow escalated hostilities: more strikes and destruction,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andri Sibikh noted on X.

According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy, strikes targeted energy infrastructure in the central Poltava region, though victim counts were not immediately available.

The ministry described the situation, stating, “The attack resulted in a massive fire.” Additionally, attacks hit oil refineries and gas facilities, labeling it a “systematic terrorist attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure” and a breach of international humanitarian law.

The intensity of this attack was notable, marking the biggest since 309 drones and eight missiles were launched into Ukraine on July 31, based on Air Force reports. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its forces shot down 23 Ukrainian drones during the same period.

Both sides have been focused on targeting crucial infrastructure, including oil facilities. Zelensky criticized Moscow for its earlier assault which claimed at least 14 lives and left many others injured, highlighting the ongoing impact of the Russian invasion.

“The Russian war machine continues to devastate lives. Putin’s actions are aimed at maintaining pressure on Ukraine and Europe while undermining diplomatic efforts. That’s why we seek assistance to end this violence,” he stated on Monday morning.
