Russia willing to engage in talks with Trump and Zelensky, says Putin's foreign minister

Putin Open to Meeting with Zelensky and Trump

Russian President Vladimir Putin is willing to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whether it’s in a one-on-one setting or alongside President Trump, according to a high-ranking official from the Kremlin.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed this openness during an interview with a state-controlled broadcaster, stating, “We will not dismiss job opportunities, whether bilateral or tripartite.” He noted that Putin has consistently signaled his willingness to engage in discussions.

Despite Zelensky’s previous requests for a direct meeting during the continuing 41-month conflict, the White House announced that a potential meeting could occur after Trump meets with Putin in Alaska this Friday, followed by talks involving Zelensky and other European leaders at the White House.

Lavrov underscored that any contacts should be approached seriously, rather than merely viewing it as simple formulas like “1+1” or “1+2.” He emphasized the importance of careful preparation for discussions involving high-ranking officials.

Meanwhile, Trump indicated that he had a conversation with Putin on Monday before his meetings with Zelensky and European leaders, suggesting that Russian officials are ready to discuss matters with their Ukrainian counterparts.

He mentioned that following a positive talk the day before, he had agreed to facilitate a meeting between Putin and Zelensky.

The specifics regarding when and where this meeting might take place remain unclear for now. German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz announced on Monday that he anticipates a meeting between the two presidents within the next fortnight.

In addition, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested on Tuesday that Switzerland could serve as a neutral ground for their next discussions.

Putin also extended an invitation to Trump to visit Moscow after his upcoming summit, but that would come only after peace negotiations have concluded.
