Russian developer sentenced to 15 years in a maximum-security prison for a $500 donation to Ukraine

Russian Developer Sentenced for Donation to Ukrainian Defense Fund

On Tuesday, a Russian software developer in Moscow received a lengthy 15-year prison sentence for donating approximately $500 to the Ukrainian Defense Fund, as reported by East 2 West. Sergei Ilin, 45, who previously worked at the tech firm Yandex, reportedly refused to stand during his sentencing. He held a sign that read, “Putin is the head of ****.”

Ilin was arrested on charges of treason and was sentenced to prison in a high-security facility for what the authorities described as “destruction.” The specifics surrounding his prison sentence and whether it was influenced by his court statements or the donation itself remain uncertain.

Footage aired by Fox News Digital shows a man, whose face is blurred, being restrained and handcuffed by masked police officers. Ilin had returned briefly to visit his mother one day after leaving Russia.

During his detention, he allegedly confessed to contributing funds to a charity supporting Kyiv’s defense forces shortly after the Russian invasion began on February 27, 2022. Ilin also expressed negative feelings toward Putin’s government and mentioned attending opposition rallies.

According to East 2 West, after his interrogation, he was transported to a notorious pretrial detention center in Moscow. Additionally, a Russian court imposed a fine of about $62,000 on him. It’s currently unknown which maximum-security facility he will be assigned to serve his sentence.
