On Friday, Romania reported that a Russian drone crashed into an apartment building in Galati, a city near its border with Ukraine, injuring at least one civilian.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that the drone malfunctioned during a sequence of attacks on Ukraine and subsequently veered into Romania. This incident occurred during a Russian offensive against Ukraine, leading to injuries for two civilians, including a woman and a child, and displacing around 70 residents, according to local reports.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte commented, emphasizing the danger posed by Russia’s “reckless actions,” which impact not just Ukraine but extend beyond its borders. He noted that this incident reiterates the consequences of Russia’s aggression against civilians and infrastructure.
I just talked to the president @NicusorDanRO about the Russian drone that crashed into a residential building in Galati, Romania. I assured him of NATO’s solidarity with Romania and expressed my sympathy to those injured…

In the wider context, Ukrainian drones have also shown erratic behavior, reportedly missing their targets and crashing in countries like Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Requests for comments from the White House, U.S. European Command, NATO, and the Romanian Embassy in Washington went unanswered.
“Within NATO territory”
This incident highlights the growing concern about drones injuring civilians in NATO territories amidst the ongoing conflict.
Romanian President Nixor Dan condemned the drone attack and mentioned collaborative responses with Ukraine and allied nations. Romania also summoned the Russian ambassador for discussions following this situation.
Since joining NATO in 2004, Romania has faced ongoing threats as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has unfolded since February 2022.
Romanian officials indicated that Russian drones have entered their airspace 28 times amidst the ongoing conflict directed at Ukrainian ports.
Ukrainian military strategies have popularized drone usage, becoming noteworthy worldwide, including in places like Iran and Lebanon. Recently, they reportedly targeted a Russian-held building in Luhansk, though Ukrainian officials asserted compliance with international law despite Russian claims to the contrary.
In retaliation for the Luhansk attack, Russia utilized various munitions, including Oreshnik missiles and unmanned drones.
In response to the drone entering Romanian airspace, Romania deployed two F-16s and a military helicopter. A Romanian defense official noted the drone’s low-altitude, short-flight path made it difficult to detect.
The situation comes amid ongoing discussions within NATO regarding defense responsibilities, as the Trump administration has urged allies to share more of the continental defense load. Adjustments to military deployment are reportedly in response to these pressures.
Inevitably, tensions in Eastern Europe continue as additional U.S. troops are being sent to Poland in light of previous troop movements, aiming to bolster regional security.
