On Wednesday, a Russian missile landed near Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s motorcade in the city of Odessa.
The missile landed about 490 feet from the convoy, which was accompanied by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. According to Greek news Protothema.
Greek and Ukrainian officials continued to travel after the missile attack, holding talks in a city in southern Ukraine on the Black Sea.
After the attack, Zelenskiy Posted in X, The social media platform formerly known as Twitter did not mention the Russian airstrikes.
President Zelenskiy said the two leaders met on March 2 at the site of a nine-story residential building that was damaged in a Russian airstrike, killing 12 people.
At a joint news conference with Mitsotakis, Zelenskyy told reporters the world “saw this blow today,” referring to a Russian airstrike near his convoy.
“We know who we are dealing with. According to comments shared by Ukrainian media, they don’t care where they attack,” Zelenskiy said. “We know there were casualties today. We don’t know the details yet, but we know there are dead and injured.”
Russia has bombed cities across Ukraine as part of a campaign to subdue the Ukrainian population, including targeting energy infrastructure.
This week, the International Criminal Court announced arrest warrants for two Russian military commanders said to be responsible for the bombing campaign.
Zelenskiy has survived multiple assassination attempts during the war, which began in February 2022, and has been instrumental in traveling throughout Ukraine, including on the front lines, during the conflict.
Ukraine’s president became famous for his quip in the aftermath of the Russian invasion, when he said that what was needed was “ammunition, not vehicles,” referring to a U.S. request to evacuate Ukraine.
Still, the attack in Odessa was a close call and signals the growing concern of Ukrainian officials like Mr. Zelenskiy as they continue to travel the war-torn country. Last year, Ukraine’s interior minister died in a helicopter crash in Kiev.
