Russian missile strike on Sumy kills 11, injures 89, Ukraine says

A Russian missile struck a residential area in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, killing 11 people, including two children, and another missile attack knocked out power to the region's administrative center, Ukrainian authorities said.

Ukraine's state emergency service announced via the messaging app Telegram that 89 people, including 11 children, were injured in the attack on the city late Sunday.

The attack on Sumy follows a morning in which Russia attacked Ukraine's power grid, with Kiev's government announcing a “massive” attack involving 120 missiles and 90 drones that killed at least seven people.

“Sunday night in the city of Sumy turned into hell. This is a tragedy that Russia brought to our country,” Volodymyr Artyov, head of the Sumy military junta, said in a post on the regime's Telegram message channel. said.

The junta said another missile hit critical infrastructure, causing a power outage in the city.

The Ukrainian Air Force announced that Russian forces used two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and one Kh-59 guided missile in the night attack.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service said on Telegram that rescue workers and all necessary services remained active at the scene, and psychologists were providing assistance to the victims.

The agency added that more than 400 people were evacuated.

Photos posted on Telegram by Ukraine's State Emergency Service showed firefighters battling a blaze that destroyed a car and rescue workers removing people from the building.

One image showed a high-rise building with nearly all its windows blown out and its facade damaged.

The Sumi District Prosecutor's Office said that 90 apartment buildings, 28 cars, two educational institutions and 13 buildings were damaged in the attack.
