Putin’s Reaction to Trump’s 50-Day Ultimatum

Russian President Vladimir Putin hasn’t publicly addressed the 50-day ultimatum set by President Donald Trump, but a high-ranking official hinted on Tuesday that Moscow was indifferent to it.

Dmitry Medvedev, the vice-chairman of the Russian Security Council and former Russian President, took to X to express the Kremlin’s preliminary thoughts on the joint announcement made by Trump and NATO’s executive director, Mark Latte, stating that there would be a 50-day window for Putin to end the war in Ukraine.

Medvedev described Trump’s ultimatum as theatrical, stating, “The world is shaking, hoping for results,” while expressing disappointment towards Europe. He added that “Russia didn’t care.”

Reactions from European Union officials were mixed as they raised concerns about the ultimatum’s effectiveness. While they acknowledged the positive aspect of Trump’s firm stance against Russia, they also highlighted the gravity of the ongoing violence in Ukraine. EU diplomat Kaja Karas noted, “On one hand, it’s very positive that Trump has taken a strong stance. On the other hand, 50 days is quite a long time if you see them killing innocent civilians every day.”

Karas emphasized the need for more pressure on Russia to seek peace, mentioning a hope for increased military aid from the US akin to what Europe has provided.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko also expressed skepticism about the outcome of the ultimatum. He appreciated the support from the US but questioned the wisdom behind granting Putin 50 days, remarking that in that time, the situation could worsen significantly in Ukraine.

Trump also expressed his frustration over Putin’s lack of decisive action during their conversations. He mentioned, “I tell him a lot about getting this done,” reflecting on instances where he thought a deal had been close, only to see missile attacks continue. “It’s strange,” he admitted, adding that repeated frustrations made him question the effectiveness of their discussions.
