RV fireball engulfs NYC diner from ‘Goodfellas,’ leading to demands for camper restrictions

Fire from a parked RV spread to the famous Queen’s Diner, known from the film “Goodfellas.” In light of this incident, one mayoral candidate is urging action against RVs on the streets.

Firefighters, numbering around 60, were dispatched to tackle the blaze that erupted at 9:30 PM on Saturday.

This incident occurred seven years after a previous fire at the same diner.

As flames rapidly advanced towards the diner, Republican mayoral hopeful Curtis Sliwa was present at a nearby fundraiser.

“We were discussing the issues surrounding RVs and litter in the outer boroughs when we had to flee Clinton Hall. The flames were spreading to Goodfellas,” Sliwa recounted.

The situation reignited discussions about the presence of illegal RVs in areas like Maspeth, Red Hook, and Hunts Point.

Sliwa criticized the city’s response, stating, “There’s been no adequate action from the police or city officials. The city seems indifferent while RVs continue to park inappropriately.” He emphasized that the RV occupants are a diverse group, including immigrants and those struggling with homelessness or addiction. “People are complaining, but nothing changes,” he noted.

Local resident Sabo Gernick, a truck driver who’s lived in Queens for years, observed that the situation has deteriorated, citing an increase in RVs that obstruct public spaces.

Sliwa is advocating for thorough inspections, more frequent cleanups, and stricter penalties for property owners who violate zoning laws regarding commercial vehicles.

“The decline in quality of life is evident. It feels as if the city doesn’t care. Local residents and businesses absolutely do care,” he remarked.
