Details Surrounding Arrest After Mother’s Homicide
BARRE, Vt. — A 22-year-old man from Massachusetts was apprehended in Vermont on Thursday, just hours after his mother was discovered dead from a gunshot wound in their home. Ryan Hanafin, whose mother Andria was 49, has agreed to be extradited back to Massachusetts.
The arrest followed a frantic search that kicked off after his father, Matthew Hanafin, returned home around 12:38 a.m. to find his wife deceased in their kitchen, as reported by Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan.
During a court session, the local prosecutor indicated she had coordinated with Massachusetts State Police and anticipated a swift retrieval of Ryan Hanafin in a brief hearing the following afternoon.
Hanafin’s Arrest and Court Appearance
In a virtual hearing, only the attorneys and media were present in the courtroom while both the judge and Hanafin appeared remotely. When asked if he could hear the judge, Hanafin responded, “Yes sir.”
He was seen wearing a protective blue covering over his shoulders as he participated from afar.
The judge informed Hanafin about the serious felony charges he would be facing in Massachusetts and explained the process regarding the formal governor’s warrant. This involves a request from Massachusetts’s governor to Vermont’s governor for Hanafin’s surrender, which is somewhat time-consuming due to the need for proper paperwork.
The judge also mentioned that Hanafin could file a habeas petition if he wished to challenge the state’s authority to detain him.
Hanafin was asked if he was under any influence or had any mental conditions that could impair his comprehension of the proceedings. In response to each query, he answered, “No sir.”
Throughout the hearing, he acknowledged that he had discussed his situation with his attorney and was aware of the legal advice provided to him.
Choosing Extradition
When the judge queried if he voluntarily wished to waive extradition and return to Massachusetts, Hanafin confirmed, “Yes, that’s what I’d like to do.”
The timing of his return to face charges related to his mother’s death remains unclear. A status conference has been scheduled for next Thursday to confirm that Massachusetts has completed the retrieval process.
Reading police have categorized him as a person of interest in this case, and the specific felony charges have not yet been disclosed to the public.
In the meantime, Vermont state police were searching for his black Dodge Charger in Warren, Vermont, where he had some known connections. About two hours into their investigation, authorities located him and conducted the arrest without incident.
