Ryan McMahon shines to assist Yankees in avoiding sweep against Phillies

The Yankees are gearing up for the upcoming trade deadline on Thursday, recognizing a pressing need to strengthen their pitching lineup.

In the meantime, they recently brought in a player who has already made a noticeable impact.

During a game on Sunday afternoon in the Bronx, he showcased his skills significantly. He played a key role in helping the Yankees secure a 4-3 victory, including a crucial two-run double.

Despite facing the challenge of the Phillies’ Zack Wheeler, the Yankees (57-48) managed to clinch a win to avoid a sweep. Their bullpen had a rare day of success, and they capitalized on opportunities to score four runs against the Phillies ace in just two innings before holding on for the win.

Starting pitcher Carlos Rodon went 5 ⅓ innings, leaving the game with a 4-3 lead. The Yankees relied on Jonathan Roashga for two outs, followed by Luke Weaver and Tim Hill each contributing three outs, effectively managing the top of the batting order.

This victory tightened their position to just 5 ½ games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East.

Ryan McMahon, acquired from the Rockies, made an impressive debut, going 2-3 with two RBIs in his second game. He also displayed solid defensive skills, making a critical play against Trea Turner and covering ground well in the field.

Rodon’s performance had its ups and downs; he allowed two home runs early in the game, both of which put the Phillies ahead 2-0. Nick Castellanos hit a changeup for a home run, and Otto Kemp followed suit with a slider that left the park.

However, the Yankees quickly regrouped. Giancarlo Stanton led off the bottom of the second with a sharp single, and Wheeler struggled to find his rhythm, loading the bases with Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Jasson Dominguez on base as well.

McMahon stepped up next, hitting a double down the right field line to tie the game. It’s worth noting that if Domínguez had advanced to third sooner, it could have been a three-run hit.

Though Austin Wells ensured they didn’t lose momentum by hitting a sacrifice fly, which brought in a run to push them ahead 3-2.

Trent Grisham’s single later contributed to McMahon scoring the winning run. Additionally, Kemp hit his second home run of the day, hitting Rodon’s fastball and bringing the score to 4-3, keeping the game thrilling until the end.
