Yankees Make Key Roster Moves Ahead of Final Playoff Push

HOUSTON – Just two years back, the Yankees were in Houston showcasing their top prospects, Jackson Dominguez and Austin Wells. This time, the team’s roster changes may lack the same star power, yet they could still play a significant role in the last month of the postseason race.

On Monday, Ryan Yarbra was activated from the injured list, just in time for the series opener against the Astros. With his return, the Yankees now have another left-handed arm in the bullpen alongside Tim Hill, which could add some depth to their pitching strategy.

Additionally, JC Escarra has been called up from Triple-A to temporarily fill in for a position player while Austin Slater wraps up his rehab assignment.

Slater is anticipated to be ready to rejoin the team soon, possibly making an appearance with the Triple-A squad before hitting the field again in the MLB.

Yarbra’s journey has been interesting; he showed promise before heading to the injured list in June and hasn’t pitched in quite some time. He’s expected to be a valuable asset, capable of pitching multiple innings if needed—and he can also be utilized against left-handed hitters.

“He was huge for us in any role,” Boone noted of Yarbra’s previous performance. “We were really excited to have him back.”

Slater’s presence on the team gives Boone more options, especially for facing left-handed pitchers, complementing Amed Rosario’s capabilities.

“Now, we can really play around with our lineup,” Boone observed. “Austin brings skills that, combined with Rosario’s success against left-handers, add depth to our attack.”

Meanwhile, Fernando Cruz seems to be returning to form after a successful rehab stint. He performed well last Sunday, recording five outs and showing flashes of his former consistency against the White Sox.

“He looks really good,” Boone commented. “When he’s on, he can dominate hitters.”

Amid the roster developments, Boone made a brief detour to North Carolina, attending the UNC Football season opener against TCU. His son, Brandon, serves as a student assistant on the coaching staff.
