Buffalo Sabers Player’s Fiancée Makes Emotional Return
Buffalo Sabers star Rasmus Dahlin’s fiancée, Karolina Matback, received a warm welcome in her first appearance of the season on Wednesday night. This moment unfolded just a few months after she experienced heart failure while vacationing in France and required a life-saving transplant.
During the game against the Boston Bruins, Matback, 25, was spotlighted on the jumbotron. As she waved to the crowd, fans erupted in cheers, and Dahlin, visible on a split screen, grinned at the enthusiastic response.
“Welcome back to Karolina Matback, the fiancée of our captain, Rasmus Dahlin,” the arena announcer said. “She’s back with us and taking part in the first game of the season. The Saberhood loves you, Karolina.”
Dahlin had previously shared an emotional letter with fans in September, detailing Matback’s health challenges during their trip. He revealed that she suffered from “severe heart failure,” which led to multiple instances of CPR that ultimately saved her life. “It’s hard to even think of the worst-case scenario,” he expressed.
After several weeks on life support, Matback underwent a transplant in France. In a touching moment, she later disclosed that she had been pregnant when she suffered the heart attack, explaining that it was concern for the fetus that made her seek medical attention in the first place.
On her due date, she shared her feelings on Instagram, stating, “Even though we never had the chance to meet you, you will always have a special place in our hearts as our first baby. Our love for you is endless.” She added, “Although you didn’t get to experience this world, you played an important role in allowing me to continue to be a part of it.”
After taking some time to be with Matback in Sweden, Dahlin is still having a standout season, ranking second on the team with 65 points. The Sabers are pushing to end their 14-season playoff drought, which, if I’m honest, could feel quite heavy at times yet also hopeful.
