Sabrina Ionescu seems to take pleasure in surprising her teammates and the Liberty’s support staff. Earlier this season, after a practice session in June, the players found customized Liberty-branded crossbody bags and suitcases waiting for them in the locker room, each adorned with jersey numbers. The gesture sparked gratitude and smiles among the team.
“Thanks, sub,” Natasha Cloud expressed with enthusiasm.
“These are adorable,” remarked Nyara Sabbary as she examined the small bag.
This week, Away made their partnership official, revealing a multi-year agreement with Ionescu. Given her busy schedule, it seems fitting that she would be the first WNBA player to collaborate with a luggage brand.
Last offseason was particularly eventful for Ionescu. She spent time in Miami and even traveled internationally for her first Asian tour as a Nike athlete. Perhaps that’s why she’s so eager about this new venture.
“It’s exciting,” she shared. “Obviously, it’s the perfect brand for what I need. I travel a lot, constantly on the go.”
This partnership appears to be a good match, given Ionescu’s dedication to promoting female athletes alongside the brand’s mission. “I’m thrilled to have a partner that’s so invested in moving the game forward,” Ionescu mentioned.
Jessica Shinaji, the CEO of Away, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the mutual appreciation between the brand and Ionescu.
“We’re inspired by individuals who challenge expectations in their fields. Sabrina is a rare talent who embodies our values—boldness, leadership, and progress,” Shinaji said in a statement. “Travel and sports are intricately linked, and our collaboration with her signifies our commitment to empowering athletes.”
Looking ahead, Ionescu and Away plan to launch a limited edition collection next year aimed at supporting teammates through Liberty Star’s SI20 Foundation and its Community Impact Initiative.
Not all of Ionescu’s travels revolve around work, though. During the WNBA offseason, she enjoys some downtime with her husband, Hroniss Grasu, often vacationing in Hawaii, saying it’s their go-to destination.
“We’re really into Hawaii,” she remarked. “It’s the perfect place to unwind—great weather, delicious food, and the ocean. Plus, the time difference allows for a refreshing start to the day.”
