MIAMI — Sabrina Ionescu returned to basketball activities this week after undergoing offseason thumb surgery.
The Liberty star said Thursday that his recovery has been going “very well” since Dec. 6 surgery to repair ligaments in his right thumb that he injured during the WNBA Finals.
“Actually, the first time I went to a show was this week,” Ionescu said. “I felt really good. I'm a little rusty, but I'm excited to shake off some of the rust and get some live reps, and I think that will take care of itself as we play this season.”
Ionescu said Unrivaled has “speeded up her recovery schedule a little bit.”
“If this hadn't happened, I probably could have spent a little more time rehabbing and waiting for my recovery,” she said.
Ionescu received a full evaluation from a Los Angeles-based doctor on January 8th and will continue his rehabilitation while at Unrivaled.
Ionescu was seen wearing a white wrap around his right hand to cover the black plastic splint that immobilizes his thumb during the Phantoms' final practice before Unrivaled ends its inaugural season with two games on Friday and Saturday. .
Ionescu is scheduled to play in the Phantoms' season opener against the Rays on Saturday, although he “still doesn't feel 100 percent.”
“I go out here and get live reps,” she said. “So everything has been going very well so far.”
In a 15-minute press conference, Ionescu said he plans to play at next month's NBA All-Star weekend in San Francisco.
