According to a police report obtained by a local news station, a Broomfield police officer began speaking with Janik online on Dec. 24, posing as a 14-year-old girl through the website Chatib.

According to a police report, Janik allegedly spoke at a McDonald's in Bloomfield, Conn., on Dec. 30, saying he wanted to have sex with someone he believed to be underage and arranging a late-night meeting.

Instead, detectives waited for Janik near the McDonald's and arrested him upon arrival.

While searching his car, officers found a laptop, cell phone and a receipt for condoms he had purchased that night, police said. A pre-written apology was found on the laptop, but it was addressed to the family of the girl Janik thought he was meeting, who didn't exist.

SHU suspended Janik after his arrest. He had been the university's associate director of athletics communications since December 2022, according to his profile on the university's website, which has since been deleted.

During questioning at the police station, Janik admitted to driving to Broomfield with the intention of having sex with the person, who he believed to be a 14-year-old girl, police said. He also sent photos of himself in his underwear to undercover agents, according to the report.

“Matthew stated that he acted out of character today because he was bored, lonely, and not feeling fulfilled at work,” the police report states.

But police say Janik also confessed to talking to an astonishing 50 girls, all of whom he claimed were under the age of 18.

The suspect admitted to receiving nude photos from the girls, including at least 12 from girls aged 11 and 12. He claimed not to have saved any photos, according to the report.

The disgraced track and field employee reportedly told police that for about 10 years, he focused primarily on girls between the ages of 14 and 20.

Police said that while Janik was still living in New Hampshire several years ago, he met in person with people he had been chatting with online, including a woman in her 20s and a 16-year-old girl.

Janik was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Hartford, Connecticut, on Monday.
