Salary cap in the NFL expected to see a major increase for the 2026 season

NFL Salary Cap Set for Significant Increase

The NFL is gearing up for a notable rise in the salary cap. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, teams have been informed that for 2026, the salary cap is projected to range from $301.2 million to $305.7 million per team. This is a considerable jump from the $279.2 million cap for 2025.

This anticipated increase will notably affect how teams construct their rosters, especially when compared to the figures from just five years ago.

The new cap estimate indicates a $20 million boost from the previous year, and it’s nearly $100 million higher than the cap set for the 2022 season, which stood at $208.2 million.

The 2023 cap was recently assigned at $224.8 million, providing teams with about $80 million in flexibility over a span of three seasons.

While a higher salary cap benefits all teams, its effects will vary significantly. For instance, the Tennessee Titans are projected to enter the summer with around $100 million in cap space, which they may use to bolster the defense under new head coach Robert Saleh and support 2025’s top overall pick, Cam Ward.

The New York Jets are also expected to have substantial cap space, estimated at $75 million, positioning them among the top teams in the league for financial flexibility.

On the other hand, teams like the Chiefs, Vikings, and Cowboys may face difficulties. These teams are projected to be over the cap, and they might have to release some players to create necessary space this offseason.

As of now, the Chiefs are forecasted to be over the cap by more than $50 million, although these numbers will be clarified as the offseason progresses.

The upcoming cap changes might have broad implications. Players with partial or non-guaranteed contracts could be at risk of being cut in the coming weeks, and there are rumors swirling about potential trades involving star players, including Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown.

This offseason, key free agents to watch include Cowboys wideout George Pickens, Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson, and Jets running back Breece Hall.
